Monday May 08, 2023
On this episode of Dystopia Tonight I had the great pleasure of hosting the legendary Jorge Calderón on the show!
Calderón is a highly accomplished musician, songwriter, and producer known for his work in the rock, pop, and Americana music scenes. He has collaborated with some of the most iconic artists of our time, including Jackson Browne, and the Eagles, and has contributed to countless hit records throughout his career.
Perhaps one of the most significant partnerships in his career was his friendship and creative collaboration with the late Warren Zevon, a legendary singer-songwriter known for his irreverent wit and unique blend of rock, folk, and pop.
We discuss Calderón meeting Zevon in the early 1970s, the two quickly becoming close friends and musical collaborators, and playing bass on Zevon's eponymous 1976 album, which included the hit single "Werewolves of London.”
He also talks in depth about how he came to sing on Warren’s tribute album, “Enjoy Every Sandwich” where he sang a cover of “Keep Me In Your Heart.”
Jorge played a significant role in helping Warren finish writing the song which ultimately became one of Zevon's most beloved and poignant compositions. In the years since Zevon's passing, Calderon has continued to honor his memory and legacy through his own music, and remains a cherished member of the wider music community as a result of his many contributions to the world of rock, folk, and pop music

Day 217 - The Art of Activism with Alan Jenkins and Gan Golan
Saturday May 06, 2023
Saturday May 06, 2023
ATTN Fellow Dystopians! On this episode of Dystopia Tonight I had the great pleasure of speaking with, two of the most vital voices in the world of graphic novels today, Alan Jenkins and Gan Golan!
Their new graphic novel, “1/6” is centered around one of the most controversial political events in recent history: the storming of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. on January 6th, 2021.
The graphic novel is a fictionalized account of the events of that day asking the question, “What if the Jan 6th riots succeeded?” Through their vivid illustrations and haunting storytelling, Golan and Jenkins transport you to a dystopian world where political tensions have boiled over into open violence. You’ll follow the stories of six individuals as they navigate the wreckage of a shattered society, struggling to make sense of the madness around them.
What sets “1/6” apart is its nuanced exploration of different perspectives, from a disillusioned Trump supporter to a Black Lives Matter activist, with stories that intersect and overlap throughout the book.
Inspired by the comics of their youth, their graphic novel isn’t just a fictionalized account of the storming of the Capitol - it’s a wake-up call for all Americans. It forces us to confront the hard truths about our country: the systemic racism, the corruption, the lies and propaganda that have driven us to the brink of collapse.
But “1/6” isn’t all doom and gloom. In the midst of all the chaos, there are moments of heroism and hope - people who refuse to give up, who refuse to be silenced. Through their stories, Jenkins and Golan remind us that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light.
Jenkins and Golan’s work is a powerful reminder of the transformative role that art can play in shaping public discourse and sparking social change. “1/6” is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of our democracy and wants to gain a deeper understanding of the complex issues at play in our society. So don’t hesitate – pick up a copy today and let this episode guide you into the brilliant minds of two creatives who are passionate about using their craft to make a difference. Enjoy!

Wednesday May 03, 2023
The king of DEVOlution is back on Dystopia Tonight with John Poveromo! Jerry Casale, one of the founding members of the iconic new wave band Devo, returns for a lively and thought-provoking discussion.
Jerry is a musician, artist, and filmmaker who has been a driving force in the world of music for over four decades. He co-founded Devo in the early 1970s with his bandmates Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Lewis, and the band quickly became known for their unique blend of punk rock, new wave, and electronic music. Devo's satirical lyrics and inventive visuals helped to define the post-punk era, and they remain an influential force in music to this day.
In addition to his work with Devo, Jerry Casale has also had a successful solo career, releasing albums such as "Everybody's Kissing Everyone" and "Late Late Late Night" and his newest album "The Invisible Man." He has also directed music videos for a number of artists, including Rush and Soundgarden.
What sets Jerry Casale apart is his unique point of view. He has always been interested in exploring the darker side of human nature, and his art reflects this fascination. He has often been compared to filmmakers like David Lynch and artists like Francis Bacon, and his work is known for its surreal and often disturbing imagery.
On this episode, Jerry and I discussed a range of topics, from the state of the music industry to the current political climate. He also talked about his own experiences as an artist and shared some insights into the creative process.
